Wanarski kicked at the sand once he reached the end of the dock, frustrated that he’d been unable to corral a 65-year-old man and his sidekick bartender. For a moment, the detective reflected soberly on the current state of his life. He wasn’t even close to being in the best shape of his life, though he could attribute some of that to his inability to resist Dan’s Doughnuts. And as painful as it might be to admit, he doubted he could jog a mile in under ten minutes. Too many hours of sitting on his fat ass whining about how he’d been wronged didn’t do him any favors when it came to getting fit. Neither did it help him become a better cop.

As Wanarski trudged back to the hotel with three immigration agents yammering about whose fault it was, the disgraced detective refused to engage. He knew he was to blame. But instead of doing the deep kind of soul searching required to pull him out of the spiral his career was on, he thought about the quickest way out. It had nothing to do with hard work or a renewed commitment to his profession, the unsavory parts and all. No, Wanarski had other ideas, other ways to climb the rickety ladder to success.

He stared at his cell phone screen for a moment before scrolling to Nichols’ number to dial it and give his partner the bad news.

“You did what?” Nichols asked.

“I’m pretty sure you heard me,” Wanarski said with a sigh.

“And you’re sure they were meeting with this known forger?”

“That’s what one of the immigration guys said their informant told them. They can’t verify any of it. And to be honest, it makes sense.”

“Makes sense how?”

“Blunt wants to get the hell outta Dodge after murdering Kyle Hunt,” Wanarski said. “So, he found a way out, a way to get a fake passport and disappear to god only knows where.”

“You really think that’s what he’s doing?”

“Why wouldn’t he be?”

“Well, for starters, he just left the country with the passport he has.”

“But he didn’t pass through immigration. And, he only went about as far as Chuck Jackson’s sea plane could take him. Everything he did here points to him wanting to go a long ways from here as soon as he can. And he’s not going to just leave his boat in the Keys either.”

A pregnant pause as Wanarski waited for Nichols to respond.

“I’ll put one of the guys on Blunt’s boat, and I’ll keep an eye out for when they return—if they return. I’m not so sure he’s going to come back here first.”

“He’s not going to ditch that boat, mark my word,” Wanarski said. “It means too much to him.”

“Were you able to find Jackson’s plane?” Nichols asked, switching gears.

“That’s a negative. He must’ve housed it in a hangar somewhere.”

“Stay there another day and see if you can find him before you head back.”

“Roger that.”

Wanarski doubted he’d be able to find them, though it would make things easier for him.
